Virat Kohli Opens Up On Decision To Retire From T20Is

When asked about his T20I retirement, Virat Kohli offered a clear and thoughtful explanation.

Former India skipper Virat Kohli has been in sublime touch in Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025, playing a key role for Royal Challengers Bangalore and currently sitting third in the Orange Cap standings.

Despite his top form, many fans continue to question his decision to retire from T20 Internationals after the 2024 T20 World Cup.

Kohli addressed these concerns in a conversation with sports anchor Mayanti Langer during an RCB event. When asked about his T20I retirement, he offered a clear and thoughtful explanation.

"Wanted to Give the Next Generation Time to Settle": Kohli

Virat Kohli shared that stepping away from the T20 format was a planned move to give emerging players a proper window to prepare for the 2026 T20 World Cup.

"I don’t think things have changed for me in any way. The decision was taken purely understanding that there are a new set of players who are more than ready. And they need time. They need a two-year cycle to evolve, handle pressure, and play in different parts of the world. And play enough games to the point where, when the World Cup comes, they feel like we’re ready," Kohli said in a video shared by RCB on X.

A Legacy to remember

Virat Kohli's inspiring T20I career has been outstanding. In 125 matches, he scored 4,188 runs at an average of 48.69, including 1 century and 38 half-centuries. He was also a key member of India's title-winning squads in the ODI World Cup, T20 World Cup, and Champions Trophy - underlining his legacy as one of the greatest in modern cricket.
