IPL Teams Can Retain Upto 4 Players From Their Current Squad Before 2022 Auction: Report

IPL Mega-Auction 2022: A maximum of three Indian and two overseas players can be retained by every franchise.

The Indian Premier League (IPL) is going to have a Mega-Auction ahead of the next season of the IPL. The current teams will be allowed to retain up to four players ahead of the IPL 2022 Auction, reported Cricbuzz.

It is understood that there has been a consensus between the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and the IPL teams on the matter of retention of players. A maximum of three Indian and two overseas players can be retained by every franchise.

The report also mentions that there were discussions between BCCI and the IPL teams representatives in UAE after the IPL 2021 ended and the conclusion was made on the number of players that can be retained.

What Does Player Retention Mean?

For IPL 2022, the teams will be completely rearranged. As per IPL rules, all the players will be back in the auction after every three years. Only those players whom a franchisee chooses to retain don't appear in the auction as he is already a part of some franchise.

To retain a player means to use the authority as a franchise to keep a player in the team. For example, the Chennai Super Kings official said that they will be retaining MS Dhoni before the upcoming auction, meaning MS Dhoni will play for CSK in the IPL 2022 as well.

As the Indian Premier League (IPL) Governing Council confirmed the news of including two new franchises, the bidding for the two new teams will be done on 25 October. IPL, which so far has eight teams participating in the cash-rich tournament, will become a 10-team affair. The new teams may have their home grounds in Ahmedabad, Lucknow or Pune and are expected to be unveiled on 25-26 October in Dubai.
