IPL 2025 Auction: BCCI To Allow IPL Franchises To Retain More Than 4 Players - Report

In a recent meeting with the owners of all 10 IPL franchises, BCCI found out that most owners were in favor of retaining between 5 to 6 players.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is likely to permit all franchises to retain up to 5 players in Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 Auction, without the option for a Right To Match (RTM) card, Express Sports reported.

No Right to Match (RTM) card option for teams in IPL 2025 Auction

The Right to Match (RTM) card in Indian Premier League (IPL) allows franchises to reacquire their former players. This rule gives a team an opportunity to retain an unretained player for highest bidding amount the player has received in that auction.

However, according to Indian Express, BCCI has decided to skip the RTM card in the IPL 2025 mega auction. RTM option was last used in 2018 mega auction.

Most owners in favor of retaining over 4 players

In a recent meeting with the owners of all 10 IPL franchises, BCCI found out that most owners were in favor of retaining between 5 to 6 players. IPL franchise owners agreed that retaining five players would help preserve the brand value of their teams.

Retaining key players allows franchises to create a strong core for their teams. Franchises like RR, CSK, and MI, which already have stable lineups, would greatly appreciate the chance to retain more than four players, as this would help preserve the foundation of their squads.

The date for Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 mega auction has not been disclosed yet, but it is expected to showcase numerous star players in the bidding.

There are rumors that Rohit Sharma might be released by Mumbai Indians (MI) and enter IPL 2025 auction, possibly signing with a different team. Similarly, KL Rahul is expected to leave Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) and could join Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) for IPL 2025.
