International Chess Day 2022: Every year, July 20 is celebrated as World Chess Day to honor the establishment of Federation Internationale des Echecs (FIDE) in 1924.

International Chess Day 2022: "Chess is not always about winning, sometimes it's simply about learning; and so is life." As we celebrate World Chess Day today, this inspiring quote emphasises the significance of one of the oldest strategy games. Chess is a board game that is based on strategy, aids in the development of tactical and strategic thinking as well as enhances visual memory.

Every year, July 20 is celebrated as World Chess Day to honor the establishment of Federation Internationale des Echecs (FIDE) or World Chess Federation in 1924. 

World Chess Day: History

It is believed that the game of chess, which was once known as "Chaturanga", dates back almost 1500 years and originated in India. It later made its way to Persia, where it flourished under the Arab rule and eventually spread to Southern Europe. 

In Europe, chess evolved into its current form during the 15th century. It changed into a modern sport by the end of the 15th century. 

Today, there are chess tournaments organised all around the world with new and intriguing variations.

Additionally, in 1861, the timing system was added to the game along with efficient regulations. On July 20, 1924, at the eighth Summer Olympic Games in Paris, France, FIDE, or the World Chess Foundation, was founded. And, on July 20, 1966, International Chess Day was observed to commemorate the establishment of FIDE. UNESCO suggested that July 20 be designated as International Chess Day.

About World Chess Federation

The chess federations of various nations are represented by FIDE and its first president was a Dutch lawyer and diplomat named Alexander Rueb. It  has 181 member federations from various nations. 

It has relocated its corporate offices to Lausanne, Switzerland, which is home to a number of sporting organizations, including the International Olympic Committee (IOC). 

The definition of standards for international chess competition, and arbiter titles are among the things regulated by FIDE. The Federation compiles and releases the Elo ratings six times a year. 

FIDE is in charge of planning numerous themes, events, and contests for International Chess Day.

Chess Grandmasters from India

There are 67 Chess Grandmasters in India, according to FIDE. First Indian Grandmaster is Viswanathan Anand. 
The 67th and most recent grandmaster in chess to come from India is Leon Mendonca. 

India's youngest GM, Gukesh D, is 12 years, 7 months, and 17 days old. In June 2018, he succeeded Praggnanadhaa, who held the record at 12 years and 10 months of age.

Chess is a universal game that encourages fairness, inclusiveness, and respect for others. It is noteworthy in this regard because it can support a climate of tolerance and international understanding.
