'Went Very Footballer Way': Sunil Chhetri On Viral 'Baby Celebration' In Intercontinental Cup

Indian footballing legend Sunil Chhetri gave a heartwarming surprise to fans when he announced that he and his wife are expecting a baby. During India's Intercontinental Cup match against Vanuatu on Monday (June 12), Chhetri left fans in awe with his unique celebration after netting a crucial goal in the 81st minute. He picked the ball and put it inside his jersey announcing that he is soon-to-be a father with the cameras pointing towards his spouse. The Indian captain's only goal helped his team Blue Tigers register a 1-0 win over their opponent, qualify for the final of the Intercontinental Cup.

Sunil and his long-time girlfriend Sonam Bhattacharya tied the knot in December 2017 and are now expecting their first baby. Meanwhile, in an exclusive interview with Indian sports journalist Boria Majumdar, Chhetri said he and his wife were planning to get the timing right to share the news with fans.

"Thank you for the wishes. It was a hard call when to announce to the world. My wife and I have been thinking about it, and we are one of those couples who have received a lot of love and affection from people across the country. So we wanted to tell them, and were also trying to get the timing right. We thought a lot about how to give the good news to everyone, and then eventually went the very footballer way. My wife said to me that as a footballer, I should score a goal and then announce it to the world. I am glad I did not have to make her wait. The day she said it, I scored against Vanuatu in the 18th minute. I ended up doing what I know as a footballer!," Cheetri said in an exclusive conversation with Boria Majumdar.

After the match got over, Chhetri confirmed the pregnancy news. "Me and my wife are expecting a baby, this is how she wanted me to announce it's for her and the baby. I just hope we got all the blessings and wishes," said Chhetri in the post-match interview.
