'Don't Deface National Flag': Sunil Gavaskar Slams Section Of Fans For Disrespecting Indian Flag At The Oval
When it comes to supporting cricket teams, Indian fans are one of the most passionate in the world. However, some fans, present in the Oval, did something that made Sunil Gavaskar unhappy.
New Delhi: Virat Kohli-led team India on Monday took a 2-1 lead in the five-match Ind vs Eng Test series after an emphatic 157-run win in Ind vs Eng 4th Test at The Oval. India set a target of 368 runs for victory in front of England, but the hosts were bundled out for just 210 runs.
The fifth and final Test of the series will be played at the Old Trafford in Manchester from Friday onwards. While India's performance in the series is being discussed, former captain Sunil Gavaskar is very angry with a section of the Indian fans.
When it comes to supporting cricket teams, Indian fans are undoubtedly one of the most passionate in the world. However, some Indian cricket team fans, present in the Oval, did something that made legend Sunil Gavaskar unhappy.
The cricketer-turned-commentator saw an Indian flag at the Oval which had something written on it. This infuriated the cricketing legend as he slammed the fans for defacing the Indian National flag.
“No matter how big a fan you are, do not deface the National Flag. That is how it has been, that is how it should remain,” said Gavaskar on air.
There are flags and then there are Flags. Sure the India supporters who came to the Oval in their thousands will enjoy this evening. I've seen many England batting collapses but I think we might need to give some credit to India's bowlers. pic.twitter.com/5aosS4D6JJ

He further said, "All those who go to the stadium with the flag of the country to support India, all of them should take special care of it. There is no problem in carrying the tricolor to watch the match, just nothing should be written on it."
'The Prevention of Insults to National Honour Act, 1971' makes writing anything on the national flag an unlawful act. However, the fans who defaced the Indian national flag can't be punished as the offense was not committed in India.
