India carved out a comfortable 3-0 victory in the Mixed Team event in the badminton semifinal match against Singapore to set up a final showdown with Malaysia. Indian badminton team has assured themselves a silver medal at the CWG 2022.
It was a Men's doubles team comprising of Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Chandrashekhar Shetty, who made a winning start while women's singles and World No 7 PV Sindhu continued the momentum to make the scorecard read 2-0. Finally, it was ace shuttler Lakshya Sen who fired team India into the final and assured at least a silver medal.
How The Victory Unfolded
Satwik and Chirag were against the Singaporean pair of Yong Kai Terry Hee and Andy Jun Liang Kwek in the men's doubles tie and sealed a straight game 21-11, 21-12 victory. The Hyderabad duo gave a sturdy start to the Indian campaign in the semis which was later continued by PV Sindhu. In the women's singles tie, Sindhu consolidated the lead with a 21-11, 21-12 victory against Jia Min Yeo. Sindhu's power-packed performance kept India afloat.
The highlight of the Mixed Team event was Lakshya Sen's duel against world champion Loh Kean Yew which saw the former winning nine points on the trot to take lead in the first game with 21-18, while in the second game the 20-year-old Lakshya displayed his prowess to completely dominate Singapore and give last laugh to India with the scoreline reading 18-21, 15-21.
With this phenomenal show, defending champions India made its way into the gold medal match and it was Lakshya who grabbed the limelight by thrashing reigning world champion to give India a complete force to march into final comfortably.
