During a TV interview, Waqar had said it was special to see Mohammad Rizwan offer Ramzan among Hindus during India vs Pakistan T20 World Cup match.

New Delhi: Former Pakistani cricketer Waqar Younis' unwarranted remark while analyzing Pakistan's 10-wicket win over India in T20 World Cup match created huge controversy. The Pakistani legend had to face severe criticism for it. Now, the fast-bowling legend has apologized for his controversial statement.

During a TV interview, Waqar had said it was special to see Mohammad Rizwan offer Ramzan among Hindus during India vs Pakistan T20 World Cup match.

“Sabse ache baat jo Rizwan ne ki. Usne ground mein khade hoke Naamaz padhi, hinduon ke beech mein…So that was really something very, very special for me," Waqar was quoted as saying by Arya News.

Waqar faced a lot of flak for his remarks and even many former cricketers criticized the fast-bowling legend.

The ex-Pakistan pace on Wednesday took to Twitter to issue an apology. Calling his statement a “genuine mistake", Waqar said he had made the controversial remark “in the heat of the moment”.

"In the heat of the moment, I said something which I did not mean which has hurt the sentiments of many. I apologise for this, this was not intended at all, genuine mistake. Sports unites people regardless of race, colour or religion. #apologies,” Younis tweeted.

“Hinduon ke beech me khade hoke namaaz padhe, that was very very special for me" - Waqar. Takes jihadi mindset of another level to say this in a sport. What a shameless man," tweeted Venkatesh Prasad.
