In what comes as a huge setback for Mumbai Indians (MI), franchise's premier pacer Jasprit Bumrah has been ruled out of 2023 season of Indian Premier League (IPL 2023) after failing to recover from his back injury (back stress fracture), ESPNCricinfo reported. It seems the injury is quite serious and Bumrah might miss most of cricketing action this year. Not just the IPL, Bumrah might also miss the World Test Championship final, set to start on June 7, 2023 at The Oval, where Rohit Sharma-led India is most likely to qualify.
A report in ESPNcricinfo claims that the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) medical staff at the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Bengaluru is treating Bumrah's case on an urgent basis.
The medical staff has reportedly recommended surgery option to Bumrah. The final decision on how to go about his treatment in the coming days will most likely be taken soon by the BCCI in coordination with Bumrah himself and the NCA, keeping in mind the ODI World Cup 2023, set to be hosted byIndia in India in October-November window.
It has been quite a frustrating few month for one of the biggest match-winners of India, Bumrah, who hasn't been able to play a single game for the national team since September 2022.
Bumrah was ruled out from Asia Cup due to the back injury he suffered last year in August. On September 12, BCCI named him in India's T20 World Cup squad and it looked like the injury was not that serious. Bumrah was also in India's playing XI for last two T20Is against Australia on September 23 and 25.
Few days later, it was learned that Bumrah's injury was serious, eventually forcing him to miss T20 World Cup 2022 in Australia.
He did some rehab in November and was added to India's squad for the white-ball series against Sri Lanka. He felt discomfort in his back while performing a fitness drill in Mumbai in early January. Fresh scans were done which revealed a fresh niggle had developed, eventually ruling him out of Ind vs Aus Border-Gavaskar Trophy. BCCI for sure doesn't want to rush things with their most valuable pacer. Fans all over the world are praying for Bumrah's health, quick recovery.
