Won 58 Medals For Delhi, But Got No Help, Says CWG Medallist Divya Kakran. AAP Reacts

Divya Kakran raised the issue of not getting any help from the Delhi government.

New Delhi: Indian wrestler Divya Kakran, who won her second consecutive bronze medal in the Commonwealth Games, has accused the Delhi government of not giving any kind of help in a press conference held on Thursday. On which, AAP MLA Saurabh Bharadwaj said, "Delhi Player lives in Delhi but has only played for the state till 2016-17. As for respect, CM called her in 2018 respectfully. We can't give her cash rewards as she represents UP but we've always respected her," as reported by news agency ANI.

Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal congratulated Divya Kakran for winning a bronze medal in the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham. During this, Kakran raised the issue of not getting any help from the Delhi government. She has won a bronze medal in the 68 kg weight category in Birmingham.

“I came to Delhi in 2001 and in 2006, I started wrestling. I am living here in Gokalpur for the last 22 years," the wrestler said at a press conference.

“My father somehow managed to get me trained for wrestling. I used to wrestle with boys to earn money," she added.

Significantly, Divya is a resident of Purbaliyan village of Muzaffarnagar, Uttar Pradesh. She has won her second consecutive bronze medal in the Commonwealth Games. Divya has demanded from the Delhi government to honor her financially.

“In 2011 I won bronze for Delhi. Till 2017, I got 58 medals and all for Delhi. Only Manoj Tiwari came to us and gave me 3 lakh, That money helped me a lot," she said.

“They (Delhi government) did not give any help. We, at our family, cried a lot at our condition. Only then I went to UP," she said.

In a series of tweets on Sunday, the wrestler said, "I thank Delhi CM from the bottom of my heart for congratulating me on my victory. I have a request. I have been living and practising in Delhi for the last 20 years, but I neither received any prize money nor did I get any help from the state @Arvind Kejriwal," Divya tweeted in Hindi.

"I request you that I be felicitated in the same manner in which you honour other Delhi wrestlers even if they represent other states," she said in another tweet.

The AAP government said in a statement, "Delhi government respects all sportspersons of the country and prays for their bright future. Currently, Divya Kakran plays for Uttar Pradesh. If she had played from Delhi or she had been part of any sports scheme of the government or she has applied in any such scheme, the government will surely look into it."
