WATCH: Steve Smith's stunning catch prevents David Warner's record 6th consecutive fifty
Steve Smith took an absolute stunner to deny David Warner's record sixth consecutive half-century
Returning to the Indian Premier League (IPL) after a year-ban, former Australian skipper Steve Smith didn’t start well for the Rajasthan Royals (RR). However, once he hit the purple path, not only he was promoted as the skipper, he started annoying the opponent bowlers as well.
Taking his regained form ahead, Smith showcased some heroics while fielding against the Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) at Jaipur on Saturday. He took an absolute stunner to deny David Warner's record sixth consecutive half-century.
The incident happened in the 13th over when Oshane Thomas bowled a short of a length delivery. Warner attempted to slap it away, only to find a thick outside edge which Steve Smith caught brilliantly. At first, it didn’t look an easy catch as Smith had to cover ground backwards.
But the RR skipper ran back and dived full-length to grab the ball; Warner was dismissed for 37 off 32 deliveries.
Here’s the video:
It was a crucial wicket for the hosts as the Surisers have already amassed 103 runs by then and Warner could have caused more damage. The left-hander made 37 runs today which is now the highest individual score in IPL without a boundary. Earlier, Rajasthan won the toss and elected to bowl first against Hyderabad. They made two changes, bringing in Liam Livingston and Ashton Turner in place of Ben Stokes and Jofra Archer, both of whom have left to join their national side ahead of the upcoming ODI World Cup. Sunrisers skipper Kane Williamson and wicket-keeper batsman Wriddhiman Saha have returned to the playing eleven.Steven Smith's brilliant running catch https://t.co/gnMrrIEmEe
