Virat Kohli Not A Certainty In India's T20 World Cup 2024 Squad: Report
Virat Kohli is not a certainty in India's T20 World Cup 2024 scheme of things, as per a recent media report.
With India's last international assignment before the the start of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 done and dusted, all ayes are now on the T20 World Cup 2024 which will be the major maquee ICC cricket event this year. The tournament is set to be played in June in USA and West Indies. While the IPL could be a final audition for some of the players to get on the flight to USA for the biennial cricket competition, a recent media report reckons that star India batter Virat Kohli is not a certainty in India's T20 World Cup scheme of things.
A news article carried by The Telegraph has claimed that Kohli can even be dropped from India's T20I squad that travels to USA and West Indies for the T20 World Cup. The publication has cited sources that have told them that the national selectors led by Ajit Agarkar as well as the team management are willing to take bold calls in the larger interest of the team and with an eye on an ICC trophy, a prize which has remained out of reach of the Indians since 2013.
The same report suggests, however, that Kohli's form in the IPL would be under scrutiny as the selectors believe that Kohli has not been able to match the team's requirement in T20Is. A good run in the IPL can, however, force the selectors to reconsider their plans.
Jay Shah Confimed Rohit Sharma As Captain In T20 World Cup 2024 But Remained Tight-Lipped On Virat Kohli
In this context, it is interesting to note that even though BCCI Secretary Jay Shah confirmed Rohit Sharma as the captain for T20 World Cup 2024, he remained tight-lipped on Virat Kohli. "We will discuss Virat’s role in due course," Shah said. This is because, as claimed by Telegraph, the BCCI does not want to get associated with this and has left it to the selection committee led by Ajit Agarkar to take the decision who believe that youngsters like Tilak Varma, Shivam Dube and Rinku Singh among others would be more apt to take the team forward.
There is still some time before India's squad for T20 World Cup 2024 is announced and it would be interesting to see who makes it into the group of players selected to try and get India its first world title in 11 years.
