South Africa Can Still Be Knocked Out Of T20 World Cup 2024 Despite Being Undefeated- Here's How

South Africa, despite being undefeated in the whole T20 World Cup 2024, still run the risk of being eliminated. Here's how:

South Africa (SA) defeated England (ENG) by seven runs in their second Super 8 match of the ongoing T20 World Cup 2024 on June 21 at the Daren Sammy National Cricket Stadium, Gros Islet, St Lucia. Interestingly, despite now winning both their Super 8 matches and all of their Group matches, South Africa still run the risk of being eliminated from the tournament. South Africa will face hosts West Indies in their final Super 8 match on June 24 and it might have a big say on their hopes of qualifying for the semi-finals.

South Africa must defeat West Indies to secure a spot in the semi-finals. If they lose their final Super 8 game, their fate will be out of their hands. South Africa, with wins against the USA and England in the Super 8s, currently sit atop the Group 2 table. However, since these victories were not convincing, the Proteas must defeat West Indies in their final Super 8 match. Aiden Markram’s South Africa narrowly won their group stage games against Bangladesh and Nepal and their Super 8 victories have also been close.

How Can South Africa Still Be Knocked Out Of T20 WC 2024?

West Indies currently hold the second position ahead of England following their convincing nine-wicket victory against USA on Saturday. Both West Indies and England have won and lost one match each, but West Indies occupy the second spot due to their superior Net Run Rate (NRR). West Indies have an NRR of +1.814, whereas England's NRR stands at +0.412.

South Africa's NRR is +0.625, while England's is +0.412. England will aim for a decisive win against the USA to boost their NRR and claim a position in the top two. If England surpass South Africa's NRR, the Proteas cannot afford to lose to the West Indies. Therefore, if England defeat USA, the West Indies vs South Africa match will be a direct battle for a semi-final spot and South Africa losing to West Indies will see them being eliminated from the World Cup.
