WATCH: Shreyas Iyer Imitates Ben Stokes' Celebration After His Direct-Hit Throw Catches England Captain Short Of Crease
IND vs ENG 2nd Test: Shreyas Iyer's run out of Ben Stokes put India firmly in the driver's seat as the hosts went on to beat England by 106 runs in the second Test.
IND vs ENG 2nd Test: India beat England by 106 runs in the second Test match of the five-match series at the Dr YS Rajasekhara Reddy ACA-VDCA International Cricket Stadium in Visakhapatnam to level the series 1-1. While India won the toss and elected to bat first, they posted 396 in the first innings riding on a double hundred from Yashasvi Jaiswal. In England's first innings, even though Zak Crawley made an attacking 76 which was complemented by Ben Stokes' 47, Jasprit Bumrah's six-wicket haul helped India bowl the Three Lions out for 253.
Then it was a hundred under pressure from Shubman Gill who had not been in the best of forms in Test cricket heading into this fixture. His innings worth 104 off 147 helped India post 255 in their second innings, giving the Three Lions a target of 399 runs to win in the fourth innings. The total proved too be too much for the visitors who bundled out for 292 in the second innings, implying a 106-run win for India who managed to level the five-match series 1-1.
While it was Bumrah and Ravichandran Ashwin who were the wreckers-in-chief for India in the second innings, Shreyas Iyer's direct-hit throw which saw the back of Stokes also had a crucial role to play. The incident happened in the 53rd over when Stokes was building a partnership with Ben Foakes. While attempting a run, there was a bit of hesitation between the two but by the time Stokes decided to go for the run with all his energy, it proved to be a little too late as Iyer's throw after running in from mid wicket caught him short of his crease. After the dismissal, Iyer was seen imitating Stokes' celebration as if to say revenge completed. For context, Stokes had ran out Ravindra Jadeja in a crucial moment of the fourth innings of the series opener in Hyderabad.
