SA20 Match Halted As Spectator Shines Laser At Heinrich Klaasen
SA20 2024: Durban Super Giants vs MI Cape Town match was halted due to a bizarre reason as a spectator shone laser at Heinrich Klaasen.
In a rare instance on the cricket fied, play had to be stopped for several minutes for a bizarre reason. The incident happened during the SA20 match between Durban Super Giants and MI Cape Town. During Super Giants' run chase of 208, a member of the crowd shone a laser at Heinrich Klaasen while he was batting. Klaseen walked into the middle at the number 5 position for the Super Giants after they found themselves at 52/3 in the seventh over. While he was looking in great nick, there then appeared to be some crowd disturbance which meant the play had to be stopped.

Even though the reason for the delay in the match proceedings was not clear, commentators specified on air that a fan had actually shone laser towards Klaseen which was ditracting him and hence the match had to be stopped. It was not a long delay but it did seem to affect the concentration of a partnership which seemed to be going well for the chasing team.

Three balls after the match resumed post this break, Klaasen's batting patner Matthew Breetzke which meant a blow to the momentum with which the team was progressing ahead. As it turned out, Super Giants won the match by 11 runs (DLS method). Rain came into play with the chasing team 177-6 in 16.3 Overs and the match could not be resumed again.
The team were found 11-run ahead of where they should have been as per the DLS target. The result meant Klaasen's 85 off 35 balls came in a winning cause, an innings which was studded with 4 fours and 8 sixes at the Kingsmead Stadium in Durban. Both the matches in SA20 so far have been rain-affected ones with the season opener being abandoned without a ball being bowled.
