Having had a remarkable ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 on home soil, Shami emerged as the leading wicket-taker with an impressive tally of 24 wickets in just seven matches. His standout performance featured a memorable seven-wicket haul against New Zealand in the semifinals.

Despite his recent success, Shami has not been included in the Indian squad for the initial two Tests of the upcoming five-match IND vs ENG home series, scheduled to commence on January 25. This omission is due to Shami's ongoing recovery from an ankle injury.

On January 12, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) announced a 16-man squad for the first two matches of the IND vs ENG five-Test series, and notably, Shami was not included. His absence from the squad was deemed a precautionary measure.

Notably, on January 9, Mohammed Shami received the prestigious Arjuna Award, the second-highest sporting recognition in India. The award was bestowed upon him by the President of India, Droupadi Murmu, during a ceremony held in Delhi.
