IND vs BAN, 2nd Test, Day 1: Ishant 5-for, Pujara-Kohli 50s Hand India 68-run Lead

India ended Day 1 of the Day-Night Test at Eden Gardens with a handy 68-run lead over Bangladesh courtesy a 5-wicket haul by Ishant Sharma and fluent half tons by skipper Kohli and Cheteshwar Pujara

Hosts India ended the opening day of the Day-Night Test against Bangladesh at the Eden Gardens on a commanding position, posting 174-3 at stumps and taking a handy 68-run lead at end of day's play. At stumps skipper Virat Kohli was unbeaten on 59 and Ajinkya Rahane was batting at 23. After the Indian pace attacked combined brilliantly to bowl out the visitors for paltry 106 runs on the back of a five wicket haul by Ishant Sharma , Virat Kohli and Cheteshwar Pujara staged a valiant third wicket partnership to help India take the lead and put the hosts in the driver's seat.

In reply to Bangladesh's below par 106-run total, India began their chase in counter attacking fashion with openers Rohit Sharma and Mayank Agarwal getting the team of to a breezy start with a flurry of boundaries. Against the run of play, seamer Al-Amin made the opening breakthrough by dismissing Mayank Agarwal for 14. After Agarwal's dismissal, Rohit Sharma and Cheteshwar Pujara played carefully in the twilight period to avoid losing any wicket till the Tea break. Hosts India posted 35 for the loss of a wicket at Tea on the opening Day of the Pink Ball Test match at the Eden Gardens. At tea on the opening day, Rohit Sharma was batting at 13 and had company in the form of Cheteshwar Pujara, who at unbeaten on 7 at the crease. Bangladesh seamer Ebadat Hossain struck after Tea dismissing Rohit Sharma for 21 . Skipper Virat Kohli joined Cheteshwar Pujara to steady the Indian innings by stitching a handy third wicket partnership and helped India take a handy lead . Cheteshwar Pujara got to his fifty and became the first Indian batsman to achieve the milestone in Day-Night Tests. Ebadat Hossain then broke the Indian resistance by scalping the wicket of the well settled Pujara, Ajinkya Rahane joined Kohli at the crease and stepped up the scoring rate with some lusty boundaries. Meanwhile, Kohli kept piling on the runs and got to his maiden fifty in pink ball Tests. During the dinner break, former India captains Sachin Tendulkar, Rahul Dravid, Kapil Dev, Dilip Vengsarkar, Kris Srikkanth, Mohammad Azharuddin, Shanta Rangaswamy, Jhulan Goswami and Mithali Raj were taken out on carts making a round of the ground along the boundary lines much to the delight of the 60,000-odd fans. Earlier, Ishant drew first blood for the hosts, trapping Kayes (4) in front two balls after a caught behind appeal was turned down as reviews showed the ball missing the bat on its way to the wicketkeeper. In the space of the next eight overs, the visitors lost four wickets as the ruthless pace arsenal fired in unison. Umesh snared two wickets in the space of three deliveries to remove visiting skipper Mominul Haque (0) and Mohammad Mithun (0) for a pair of ducks. While Rohit took a brilliant one-handed catch diving low from second slip to send Mominul back, Mithun was castled. In the next over, Mushfiqur Rahim (0) chopped a fast Shami delivery on to his stumps. Shadman was caught behind off Umesh. Mahmudullah and Liton tried to forge a partnership but an outstanding catch by Wriddhiman Saha behind the stumps off Ishant sent the former back in the hut as Bangladesh huffed and puffed to tea at 73/6. Liton, who was hit on his helmet by a fierce Shami bouncer at the stroke of tea, did not come out to bat after the break with Mehidy coming out to bat after Ebadat Hossain (1) was clean-bowled by Ishant. The all-rounder managed to score eight before Pujara took a sharp low catch at mid wicket off Ishant to get him out. Nayeem, who also picked up a knock on his helmet, carried on before he was castled by Ishant. Shami sent Abu Jayed back as Bangladesh's abysmal innings came to and end inside three hours.
