David Warner appointed captain of BPL franchise Sylhet Sixers

David Warner will lead Sylhet Sixers in the sixth season of the Bangladesh Premier League, which is scheduled to begin on January 5.

Banned Australian vice-captain David Warner has been appointed as the captain of Bangladesh Premier League franchise Sylhet Sixers for the upcoming season starting on January 5.

Warner was a direct pick of Sylhet along with Nepal leg-spinner Sandeep Lamichhane.

Warner, currently serving a 12-month ban for his involvement in the infamous ball-tampering saga in Cape Town in March this year, will be playing his third big tournament after appearing in the Global T20 in Canada and the Caribbean Premier League in the West Indies. The left-hander was not allowed to play in IPL 2018 but his franchise Sunrisers Hyderabad did retain him for IPL 2019.

Warner was not in his best in GLT20 and CPL, scoring only 109 and 220 runs in the tournaments respectively with a moderate strike rate of 113.

The feisty left-hander though would be hoping to be back in the grove before the IPL and Australia’s UAE tour. Warner and captain Steve Smith’s bans end on March 29 next year.

Apart from Warner, the Sylhet Sixers have the likes of Andre Fletcher, Mohammad Irfan and Sohail Tanvir as their foreign recruits. The team also boasts of local talents like Bangladesh middle-order batsman Sabbir Rahman and fast bowler Taskin Ahmed.
