Cricket World Cup 2023: What Is The Round-Robin Stage And All You Need To Know About The Format

Cricket World Cup 2023: 48 matches will be played across 45 days as international cricket's biggest tournament gets underway in India.

The ICC Men's Cricket World Cup 2023 is all set to get underway with England taking on New Zealand in match number 1 of the tournament set to be played at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad later today (October 5, 2023). As many as ten teams are participating in this competition. One may wonder how many groups have they been divided into. But here's the catch, there is one large group stage followed by the knock-out games.

ICC Men's Cricket World Cup 2023: Format

All the ten participating teams will first compete in a round-robin stage. In this stage of the tournament each team will face every other team once. This means all the sides will have nine league stage or round robin stage matches. The team that wins a match in this round will be awarded two points for a win, one for a tie or a no-result and none for a loss. When all teams have played nine matches each, the four teams that sit at the top of the points table will play the semifinals which will be a knock-out fixture. The team that finishes first in the group will take on the one that came fourth in one semifinal while the team ranked two on the table will take the team that finished third in the other semifinal fixture. The winner of the two semis will lock horns in the final where the team that wins will be crowned the ICC Men's Cricket World Cup 2023 champions.

While teams will be awarded a point each in case the a match in the round-robin format ends in a tie, there is a provision for a Super Over, in case of a tie in the knock out round of the competition. If the Super Over too ends with scores levelled, the one-over eliminator will continue until there is a winner.  Hosts India, Afghanistan, Australia, Bangladesh, England, Netherlands, New Zealand, Pakistan, South Africa and Sri Lanka are the ten participating teams at the ICC Men's Cricket World Cup 2023.

Ahmedabad (Narendra Modi Stadium), Bangalore (M Chinnaswamy Stadium), Chennai (MA Chidambaram Stadium), Delhi (Arun Jaitley Stadium), Dharamshala (Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association Stadium), Hyderabad (Rajiv Gandhi International Cricket Stadium), Kolkata (Eden Gardens), Lucknow (Bharat Ratna Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee Ekana Cricket Stadium), Mumbai (Wankhede Stadium), Pune (Maharashtra Cricket Association Stadium) are the ten venues that will host the World Cup games in India.
