Champions Trophy: Not Just Pakistan! Two More Host Teams Failed To Reach Knockouts
The ICC Champions Trophy was introduced in 1998 to promote cricket in non-traditional cricketing nations.

Pakistan had the opportunity to host an ICC tournament after 29 years, with ICC Champions Trophy 2025 being played under a hybrid model. However, their campaign ended in disappointment as they were eliminated from the semi-final race after back-to-back defeats.
While this is a setback for the host nation, history shows that Pakistan is not the first host team to suffer such a fate.
When hosts failed to reach the ICC Champions Trophy knockouts
The ICC Champions Trophy was introduced in 1998 to promote cricket in non-traditional cricketing nations. Bangladesh hosted the inaugural edition but did not participate. Similarly, Kenya hosted the 2000 edition, but their national team did not qualify for the tournament.
In 2002, Sri Lanka hosted the Champions Trophy, but the final against India was abandoned due to rain, resulting in both teams being declared joint winners. England hosted the tournament in 2004, reached the final, and lost to the West Indies.
In 2013, England again made it to the final but was defeated by India. In 2017, they reached the semi-finals.
Apart from Pakistan, India and South Africa are the other teams who hosted Champions Trophy but failed to qualify for knockouts.
India hosted the 2006 Champions Trophy but was eliminated in the group stage due to poor performance.
In 2009, South Africa hosted the tournament but failed to progress beyond the group stage.
