Ashes 2023: England Players Exchange Jerseys In Support Of Dementia Patients

Assistant coach of England Marcus Trescothick spoke about the decision and said it was a collective call of the ECB and Alzheimer’s Society.

In the ongoing final Test of Ashes 2023, England cricketers were spotted wearing jerseys with the wrong names printed on it on the third day of play to support the people affected by dementia. Legendary pacer James Anderson wore a jersey of Stuart Broad, Bairstow donned the jersey with the name of Ben Stokes on it, and veteran spinner Moeen Ali put on the t-shirt with the name of Chris Woakes.

The English players took the initiative to show support for the people suffering from dementia, a disorder that causes loss of memory. Assistant coach of England Marcus Trescothick spoke about the decision and said it was a collective call of the ECB and Alzheimer’s Society.

“We are here supporting the Alzheimer’s Society, and it is a subject very close to our hearts. It is a terrible disease,” said Trescothick while talking to Sky Sports.

“We are here to try and raise awareness and bring it to the fore by educating people, and raising money too. The more money and awareness go into it, there will be more research.

“We have seen that new medication and new drugs have come into the market, they can make a big impact into that. Hopefully, today’s initiative will keep pushing people to understand that,” added Trescothick.

Trescothick who is a former England opener also has a personal reason for getting associated with the novel cause as his father, Martyn, is suffering from dementia. The ongoing Ashes 2023 series have witnessed a lot of ups and downs where the visitors managed to win the Two Test matches in a dramatic fashion. The hosts however made a terrific comeback as they registered a 3-wicket win in the Third Test to remain alive in the series.
