150 Years Of Test Cricket: England & Australia Unveil Anniversary Plans

To commemorate this historic milestone, Cricket Australia has decided to host the first-ever pink-ball Test at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG).

Cricket Australia (CA) has announced that a special day-night Test match between Australia and England will be played at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) from March 11-15, 2027, to mark the 150th anniversary of men's Test cricket.

The first-ever Test match was played at the MCG in 1877, with Australia defeating England.

To commemorate this historic milestone, Cricket Australia has decided to host the first-ever pink-ball Test at the venue, making it a unique departure from previous anniversary matches.

A new era for an iconic venue

Unlike the 1877 and 1977 centenary Tests, both played during the day with a red ball, the 2027 edition will be a day-night affair, aiming to attract larger crowds by aligning with school and work schedules.

Australia won both the 1877 and 1977 anniversary Tests by 45 runs, and cricket fans will be eager to see if history repeats itself once again. This match promises to be a fitting tribute to 150 years of Test cricket and a celebration of its rich legacy.

"(It) will be one of the great cricket events and playing under lights will be a fantastic way to celebrate both our game’s rich heritage and Test cricket’s modern evolution," Cricket Australia chief executive Todd Greenberg said in a statement.

"It will also help ensure more people are able to attend and watch what will be a fantastic occasion."

Australia's five-Test tour of England is set to begin in November this year. Following this, Australia will host England in 2027 for the historic 150th anniversary Test, celebrating a landmark moment in cricket history.

Before the anniversary match, Australia will take on India in a high-stakes five-Test home series in early 2027. Once that concludes, attention will shift to the historic clash against England, with the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) set to play a key role.

The MCG also hosted the 100th anniversary Test in 1977, where Greg Chappell-led Australia defeated Tony Greig's England by 45 runs
