Chess Olympiad 2024 In Hungary: Full Schedule, Format, Teams, Live Streaming Details — All You Need To Know

As the 45th Chess Olympiad has kicked of in the Hungarian capital Budapest, here's all you need to know from Indian players in action to the full schedule of the competition.

The 45th Chess Olympiad, a famous international chess tournament organised by the International Chess Federation, commonly known as its French acronym FIDE, is taking place in the capital of Hungary — Budapest, from September 10 (Tuesday) to 23 (Monday). At the Chess Olympiad, Indian teams will compete for gold medals in both the open and women’s categories.

Notably, India’s Viswanathan Anand will not be part of the Indian open team, which will be led by D. Gukesh, the FIDE Candidates 2024 in Canada tournament winner. Similarly, India’s Koneru Humpy will be absent from the women’s team.

As the Chess Olympiad 2024 goes on, here's all the important details about the tournament you may need to know:

Teams In Chess Olympiad 2024

A total of 196 teams will compete in the open section and 184 in the women’s section.

Major Teams For Chess Olympiad 2024

In the open section, the top-seeded teams are the USA, followed by India, China, and Uzbekistan.

For the women’s section, the top seeds are India, Georgia, Poland, China, and Ukraine.

What is the format for the Chess Olympiad 2024?

The Chess Olympiad 2024 will use the Swiss System format, featuring 11 rounds for both the open and women’s sections. Each team and player will compete in 11 matches. A win will earn two match points, while a draw will award one point. The team with the most match points at the end of the 11 rounds will be declared the winner.

Each game in the Chess Olympiad 2024 will have a time control of 90 minutes for the first 40 moves, followed by 30 minutes for the remainder of the game. An increment of 30 seconds per move will apply from move 1 onwards.

The 45th Chess Olympiad will take place at the BOK Csarnok events venue in Budapest, Hungary, from September 11 to 22.
