‘Captain Cool’ MS Dhoni Trademarks His Iconic Moniker To Control Commercial Use

MS Dhoni, celebrated as 'Captain Cool', has trademarked the moniker for sports-related business ventures. This secures his exclusive rights to the phrase.

Former India skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni, fondly dubbed ‘Captain Cool’ for his composed leadership style, has taken steps to formally secure exclusive rights over the iconic moniker. The legendary cricketer has registered the phrase ‘Captain Cool’ as a trademark, ensuring the title remains his personal property for commercial and sporting use.

According to the Trade Marks Registry portal, Dhoni’s application for the ‘CAPTAIN COOL’ trademark was filed on June 5 and subsequently accepted and advertised in the official trademark journal on June 16. The trademark falls under the category covering sports training, coaching services, and sports facilities, allowing Dhoni to leverage the term for business interests linked to sports-related ventures.

Exclusive Rights to ‘Captain Cool’

The phrase ‘Captain Cool’ has long been synonymous with Dhoni’s unflappable demeanour on the cricket field, especially during nerve-wracking encounters. By securing the trademark, Dhoni has ensured that no individual or entity can legally exploit the term for commercial gain without his consent.

Interestingly, Prabha Skill Sports (OPC) Pvt Ltd had previously attempted to register a similar trademark, but their application currently stands at ‘rectification filed’ status, as per details on the Trade Marks Registry website.

Dhoni Joins Cricketing Legends in ICC Hall of Fame

Earlier in June, Dhoni has been inducted into the prestigious ICC Cricket Hall of Fame for the year 2025. The International Cricket Council (ICC) announced earlier this month that Dhoni was among seven cricketing stalwarts honoured, a list that includes Australia’s Matthew Hayden and South Africa’s Hashim Amla.

An ICC statement celebrated Dhoni as “a player who excelled not just in numbers but also in extraordinary consistency, fitness and longevity.” The governing body praised his trailblazing influence in limited-overs cricket, calling him one of the sport’s greatest finishers, tactical masterminds, and wicketkeepers.

Reflecting on the recognition, Dhoni expressed his gratitude in a heartfelt statement shared by the ICC: “It is an honour to be named in the ICC Hall of Fame, which recognises the contributions of cricketers across generations and from all over the world. To have your name remembered alongside such all-time greats is a wonderful feeling. It is something that I will cherish forever.”

Dhoni’s illustrious career saw him amass 17,266 international runs, claim 829 dismissals behind the stumps, and feature in 538 matches for India. Among his many records, he holds the distinction of the most stumpings in ODIs (123), the highest score by a wicketkeeper in ODIs (183*), and captaining India in a record 200 ODIs.

His leadership pinnacle came with India’s historic triumph in the 2011 ODI World Cup — the team’s first in 28 years — adding to earlier successes in the 2007 T20 World Cup and the 2013 Champions Trophy.

Despite retiring from international cricket in 2020, Dhoni remains a central figure in Indian cricket, continuing to represent the Chennai Super Kings in the Indian Premier League.
