Cancer is a leading cause of death worldwide, with an estimated 8,51,678 deaths in 2020 in India alone. Breast and lung cancer are among the most common types of cancer, and they account for a significant portion of cancer-related deaths. This is why it is crucial that we take action to prevent and detect these cancers as early as possible.
According to the World Health Organization (WHO), early detection can save lives by allowing for earlier treatment and better outcomes. Breast cancer, when detected in its early stages, has a survival rate of over 90%. Regular screenings, such as mammograms, can detect breast cancer early and increase the chances of survival. Similarly, lung cancer has a higher survival rate when detected early, and low-dose CT scans can be used to screen for lung cancer in high-risk individuals.
In addition to early detection, prevention is also important in the fight against cancer. For breast cancer, maintaining a healthy weight, being physically active, and limiting alcohol consumption can reduce the risk of developing the disease. Furthermore, breast cancer can also be prevented through genetic counseling and testing for those at high risk of inheriting certain genetic mutations that increase the risk of breast cancer. For lung cancer, the most effective way to prevent the disease is to quit smoking. Smoking is the leading cause of preventable deaths worldwide, and it is responsible for around 85% of lung cancer deaths. Quitting smoking can significantly reduce the risk of developing lung cancer, as well as other serious health conditions such as heart disease and lung disease.
Another important aspect of the fight against cancer is access to quality cancer care. According to WHO, around 70% of deaths from cancer occur in low- and middle-income countries, where access to cancer care is often limited. This highlights the importance of increasing access to cancer diagnosis and treatment, as well as cancer research and development. This includes access to screening, early detection, and treatment, as well as access to new technologies and therapies.
It is essential to remind all that we can play a role in reducing the impact of cancer on our lives and those around us. By making healthy lifestyle choices, getting regular screenings, and increasing access to cancer care, we can save lives and reduce the impact of cancer on individuals and communities around the world.
