Company Making Tom Cruise's Space Movie Plans To Launch First Film Studio In Space By 2024. All You Need To Know
Space Entertainment Enterprise, the company co-producing Tom Cruise's upcoming space movie with Doug Liman, will launch the world's first film studio in space by 2024.
New Delhi: Space Entertainment Enterprise (S.E.E.), the UK-based media company co-producing actor Tom Cruise's upcoming space movie, has announced its plans to launch the world's first film studio in space, by 2024.
SEE is co-producing Tom Cruise's upcoming space movie with Doug Liman, an American film director.
Specialities Of The Space Station Module
The space station module, called SEE-1, will be the first multipurpose entertainment and content studio in space, and will consist of a sports arena, the UK-based company said in a statement.
Axiom space, an American private firm that develops space infrastructure, will build the ground-breaking new venture.
After launching in late December 2024, SEE-1 will dock with Axiom's commercial space station, called Axiom Station, while it is connected to the International Space Station. Axiom Space received NASA's approval for the same in January 2020.
Axiom Station will be the commercial wing of the ISS, which will separate from the ISS in 2028.
The micro-gravity film, TV, sport, and entertainment production and broadcast module targeted for launch in 2024 will allow artists, producers, and creatives to develop, produce, record, and live-stream content which maximises the space station's low-orbit micro-gravity environment. The content includes films, television, music, and sports events, according to the SEE statement.
Prominent Figures Involved In The Venture
The space module is co-founded by Elena and Dmitry Lesnevsky, media entrepreneurs and film producers who are producing the first ever Hollywood motion picture filmed in outer space.
Several prominent figures are involved in this venture, including former Senior Vice President of Sports and Pay Per View at HBO, the former CEO of Endemol Shine UK, the former Vice President of Technology at Viacom, and New York City-based investment bank GH Partners.
All About Tom Cruise's Upcoming Space Movie
Universal Pictures is intending to begin production on Tom Cruise's untitled space movie sometime next year, according to a report by CinemaBlend. The studio is waiting for Liman to deliver the script he is co-writing with American screenwriter Christopher McQuarrie. Tom Cruise's untitled movie will be the second feature film to be shot in space. In October 2021, a Russian film crew travelled to the ISS to shoot parts of the movie with the working title 'Vyozov', meaning 'The Challenge', became the first feature film to be shot in space.
According to a Variety report, most of the footage for Tom Cruise's movie will be filmed on Earth, and will be "partially shot" on the ISS. Some footage will also be obtained on a rocket, and rather than being a sci-fi movie, the project is described as an "action story" in which Tom Cruise will play "down-on-his-luck guy who finds himself in the position of being the only person who could save Earth," the report said.
The movie will be Cruise's next big-screen outing after he completes production of Paramount's Mission: Impossible 8.
What Do The People Involved Say?
Quoting Dmitry and Elena Lesnevsky, the SEE statement said that SEE-1 is an incredible opportunity for humanity to move into a different realm and start an exciting new chapter in space. They said that SEE-1 will provide a unique and accessible home for boundless entertainment possibilities in a venue packed with innovative infrastructure, which will unleash a new world of creativity.
"With worldwide leader Axiom Space building this cutting-edge, revolutionary facility, SEE-1 will provide not only the first, but also the supreme quality space structure enabling the expansion of the two trillion-dollar global entertainment industry into low-Earth orbit," they further said.
The space arena will provide the venue and production infrastructure for hosting and filming third-party content and events, according to the statement.
The space module is planned to become operational starting in December 2024. The content creation venue will comprise one-fifth of the volume of Axiom Station after it separates from the ISS in 2028.
Michael Suffredini, President/CEO of Axiom Space, said that Axiom Station is the world's first commercial space station, and is designed as the foundational infrastructure enabling a diverse economy in orbit. He said that adding a dedicated entertainment venue to Axiom Station's commercial capabilities in the form of SEE-1 will expand the station's utility as a platform for a global user base and highlight the range of opportunities the new space economy offers.
"From Jules Verne to Star Trek, science fiction entertainment has inspired millions of people around the world to dream about what the future might bring. Creating a next generation entertainment venue in space opens countless doors to create incredible new content and make these dreams a reality," Richard Johnston, Chief Operating Officer, SEE, was quoted as saying in the statement.

Return from Orbit is a 1984 Soviet sci-fi movie which featured scenes filmed in orbit onboard Salyut 7 space station and Soyuz T-9 spacecraft.
In 2008, space tourist Richard Garriott made a seven-minute short film called Apogee of Fear, which features acting debuts by various astronauts.
The Russian film crew for 'The Challenge' comprising of Russian actor Yulia Peresild, and film director Klim Shipenko, launched to the ISS on October 5, 2021 to shoot the first full-length, fictional movie in space. The mission, commanded by cosmonaut Anton Shkaplerov, was launched aboard the Soyuz MS-19 manned spacecraft to the ISS, from the Baikonur spaceport.
The crew stayed on the ISS for 12 days to film scenes for the first feature movie to be shot in space. The movie is a joint project by Roscosmos, Channel One and the Yellow, Black and White film studio.
After spending 12 days in space, Peresild and Shipenko returned to Earth on October 17 aboard a Soyuz MS-18 manned spacecraft. The return mission was commanded by cosmonaut Oleg Novitskiy. Most of the footage to be included in the film was shot in space.
In the movie, Peresild will be seen portraying a woman doctor who had to go to space to save a cosmonaut's life.
‘The Challenge’ will show the training received by the doctor before going to space and the challenges faced by her while treating the cosmonaut in the environment of the orbital outpost.
The movie will also feature Russian cosmonauts Shkaplerov, Novitskiy, and Pyotr Dubrov.
