Utpanna Ekadashi 2024: Know Who Is Devi Ekadashi And Why Is She Worshipped On Utpanna Ekadashi
Utpanna Ekadashi, observed on the Krishna Paksha Ekadashi of the Margashirsha or Agahan month, marks the beginning of the Ekadashi fasting tradition as per religious beliefs.
Utpanna Ekadashi 2024: According to the Panchang, the eleventh day (Ekadashi) of both the Krishna Paksha and Shukla Paksha is referred to as Ekadashi. The Ekadashi that falls during the Krishna Paksha of the Margashirsha month is known as Utpanna Ekadashi, as it marks the origin of Devi Ekadashi. This is why it is named 'Utpanna Ekadashi'.
This year, the Utpanna Ekadashi fast will be observed on November 26, 2024, and the fast-breaking will take place on November 27, 2024. While all Ekadashis hold special religious significance in Hinduism, Utpanna Ekadashi is unique as it involves worshiping both Lord Vishnu and Devi Ekadashi.
According to mythology, Devi Ekadashi originated from a divine part of Lord Vishnu. She emerged from His body on the Ekadashi Tithi, which is why she is called Devi Ekadashi. For those wishing to begin the Ekadashi fasting tradition, Utpanna Ekadashi is considered an auspicious day to start.
Utpanna Ekadashi Vrat Katha
According to the mythological story associated with Utpanna Ekadashi, in the Satya Yuga, there was a demon named Nadi Jangha, whose son was Mura. Mura was extremely powerful and mighty. He conquered the domains of various deities, including Indra, Varuna, Yama, Agni, Vayu, Ish, Chandra, and Nairiti. All the gods were defeated by him in battle and ultimately sought refuge with Lord Shiva on Mount Kailash.
Lord Shiva then advised the gods to approach Lord Vishnu for a solution to their problem. Lord Vishnu, to protect the gods from the demon Mura, arrived on the battlefield and engaged in combat with Mura and his army. The battle between Lord Vishnu and Mura lasted for 10,000 years. Despite being repeatedly shattered and struck down, Mura neither lost nor died during the prolonged battle.
The Origin Of Devi Ekadashi
Lord Vishnu was completely exhausted from the battle and went to the Badri Kashram cave to rest. However, Mura followed him there as well. As Mura was about to strike while Lord Vishnu was resting, a radiant goddess emerged from Lord Vishnu's body and killed Mura. When Lord Vishnu woke up, he said, 'Devi, you were born from my body on the Krishna Paksha Ekadashi of the Margashirsha month, so your name will be Ekadashi, and on this day, you will also be worshipped.'
