When Will Kanwar Yatra 2025 Begin?

This year, the Kanwar Yatra is set to begin on July 11, 2025. With the arrival of Sawan, Shiv devotees eagerly await the auspicious date to begin their journey carrying the Kanwar.

Religious Significance Of The Kanwar Yatra

The Kanwar Yatra is undertaken by Lord Shiv’s devotees during the month of Sawan. These pilgrims, called Kanwariyas, fetch holy Ganga water primarily from sacred sites such as Haridwar, Gangotri, and Gaumukh. They travel — mostly on foot — back to their hometowns or villages to offer the water on a Shivling in local temples.

This offering is performed with strict discipline, devotion, and adherence to religious customs. As per Hindu beliefs, offering Ganga Jal on the Shivling pleases Lord Shiv, who then blesses the devotee and fulfills their desires.

Mythological Legend Behind The Kanwar Yatra

The origins of the Kanwar Yatra can be traced to ancient Hindu mythology. According to scriptures, during the churning of the ocean (Samudra Manthan), a deadly poison (Halahal) emerged. To save the world, Lord Shiv consumed this poison and held it in his throat, which caused his body to heat up.

To cool him down, the sages and deities poured holy Ganga water over him. This act of offering Ganga Jal continues today in the form of the Kanwar Yatra, as a tribute to that divine gesture. Devotees believe that offering the sacred water helps soothe Lord Shiv and brings them divine blessings.

A Journey Of Faith, Discipline, And Devotion

More than just a ritual, the Kanwar Yatra represents the immense faith, dedication, and physical-spiritual discipline of the devotees. Each year, lakhs of people, including children and the elderly, participate in this divine journey.
