This year, the auspicious day coincides with the second Amrit Snan of the Maha Kumbh on January 29, 2025. It is considered a highly sacred occasion.

Significance Of Mauni Amavasya:

The term "Mauni Amavasya" translates to the "Amavasya of Silence." On this day, devotees observe silence and take a holy dip at the Sangam in Prayagraj, while others bathe in sacred rivers to earn spiritual merit.

Date And Time Of Mauni Amavasya 2025:

As per the Hindu Panchang, Mauni Amavasya will begin on January 28 at 7:35 PM and end on January 29 at 6:05 PM. The rituals will primarily be observed on January 29.

Rare Yogas On Mauni Amavasya:

  • Shivvas Yoga: A rare Shivvas Yoga will occur until 6:05 PM on January 29. According to religious beliefs, Lord Shiva, along with
  • Goddess Parvati, will preside over Mount Kailash on this day.
  • Siddhi Yoga: Siddhi Yoga will be in effect until 9:22 PM. Worshipping Lord Shiva during this yoga is believed to fulfill desires.

Additionally, the presence of Shravan and Uttarashada Nakshatras enhances the auspiciousness of the day.

Rituals For Grihastha Individuals

While observing silence for an entire day can be challenging for those living a household life, they can break their vow of silence after completing their prayers and rituals.

Spiritual Practices On Mauni Amavasya:

  • Begin the day with an early morning bath in the Ganges or any sacred river. If unavailable, mix Ganga water in your bath.
  • Offer Arghya (water offering) to the Sun God after bathing. Avoid speaking until the bath is complete.
  • Engage in meditation, prayers, and religious activities.
  • Donate food, clothes, or money to the needy to earn spiritual merit.
  • Feed animals and birds, as this brings blessings from ancestors.
  • Observe fasting for auspicious results.

Donations And Offerings:

On Mauni Amavasya, charity plays a vital role. Donations of oil, blankets, milk, sugar, grains, or money are considered highly beneficial. Feeding the needy is believed to bring the blessings of ancestors and resolve life’s challenges.

What Not To Do On Mauni Amavasya:

  • Avoid consuming meat, alcohol, or tamasic foods. Stick to simple, vegetarian meals.
  • Try to remain silent for as long as possible.
  • Do not lie, as it can negatively affect your life.
  • Avoid oversleeping and keep negative thoughts at bay.

Mauni Amavasya Mantra Chanting:

Chanting the mantra, "Om Adya-Bhootaya Vidmahe Sarva-Sevyaya Dheemahi, Shiva-Shakti-Swaroopena Pitru-Deva Prachodayat" 108 times while offering Arghya to the Sun God is believed to free one from Pitru Dosha (ancestral afflictions).

Astrological Significance:

According to Vedic astrology, Mauni Amavasya is celebrated when the Sun and Moon align in Capricorn during the Magha month. Capricorn, the 10th zodiac sign, is associated with strong solar energy. The combined energies of the Sun and Moon make this day spiritually potent.
