Typically, idols used during festivals like Ganeshotsav or Durga Puja are immersed within ten days, but the Laxmi-Ganesh idols used during Diwali are kept for the entire year.
In ancient times, clay idols were commonly used for worship. These idols would deteriorate, break, or lose their appearance over the course of the year. Thus, during the auspicious occasion of Diwali, the old idols would be immersed, and new ones brought in for the puja. This tradition has continued, making it a custom to buy new idols every Diwali.
When Should You Buy Laxmi-Ganesh Idols?
The most auspicious day to buy new Laxmi-Ganesh idols for Diwali is on Dhanteras. Along with shopping for other items, devotees also purchase the idols on this day. This year, Dhanteras will be observed on Tuesday, October 29, 2024, and Diwali will be celebrated on October 31, 2024.
