Oppo Reno 12 5G First Impressions | The New Mid-Range Champion To Beat?

The camera-centric Reno 12 has AI capabilities that include an improved version of intelligent object removal, a smart mode for capturing optimal shots, a feature that selects the best facial expressions in group photos and an AI-driven suite of editing tools. 

The Oppo Reno 12 has a triple-camera configuration dominated by a 50MP Sony LYT 600 sensor, an 8MP ultra-wide-angle sensor and a 2MP macro sensor. The primary and macro sensors stood out for me during preliminary testing. The wide angle lens is more of a hit-and-miss.

The Reno 12 5G boasts a range of protective features like certification for resistance against dust and water ingress (IP65) and advanced scratch-resistant glass technology for the display.

The Reno 12 lineup comes with custom ColorOS 14.1, based on Android 14 and Oppo is pledging three years of major OS updates, which is decent enough.

The handset maker claims that Reno 12 series incorporates a unique protective design inspired by the structure of a sponge, which is engineered to improve the device's resilience when subjected to falls. The phone sustained a few drops in the preliminary test and continued to work fine.

The device's frame is constructed using an advanced alloy composition, incorporating elements such as copper, magnesium, and silicon. Reno 12's material blend is made of a robust and corrosion-resistant structure, thus, offering durability.

The phone supports 80W SuperVOOC fast charging and features a hefty 5,000mAh battery. The Reno 12 offers more colour options than the pricier sibling Reno 12. It comes in Sunset Peach, Matte Brown and Astro Silver.
