Donald Trump Backs Elon Musk In H1-B Visa Debate: 'I've Always Been In Favour...'
US President-elect Donald Trump said he supported H1-B visas after Elon Musk joined the debate in favour of the immigration of highly skilled workers to the US.
US President-elect Donald Trump sided with his key supporter and tech billionaire Elon Musk in backing the H1-B visas for highly skilled workers saying he has always been in favour of visas.
“I’ve always liked the visas, I have always been in favour of the visas. That’s why we have them," Trump told the New York Post.
He further said he has many H1-B visas on his properties. "I’ve been a believer in H-1B. I have used it many times. It’s a great program,” added Trump, who had moved to limit the uses of visas during his first presidency.
A high-pitch war of words had erupted in America over hiring H1B visa holders. The visa is required by skilled professionals from other countries to work in the US with Indians forming a big part of this chunk.
For the past few days, a large number of people on social media -- especially Make America Great Again (MAGA) loyalists -- have been speaking against immigrants following the appointment of Indian-American Sriram Krishnan as Senior Policy Advisor for Artificial Intelligence at the White House by Trump.
On Saturday, Musk joined the debate with a strong comment asking right-wingers and MAGA loyalists to "take a big step back."
“The reason I’m in America along with so many critical people who built SpaceX, Tesla and hundreds of other companies that made America strong is because of H1B," said Musk, who also holds the H1-B visa.
"Take a big step back," Musk warned the opposing camp, adding: "I will go to war on this issue the likes of which you cannot possibly comprehend."
The entire debate began after Krishnan said that any step in bringing more skilled professionals to the US on H1-B visas "would be huge."
However, this did not go down well with anti-immigration MAGA loyalists with right winger Laura Loomer calling tech executives "termites".
