US Sikh Lawyer Approaches Kamala Harris To Seek Release Of Amritpal Singh Who Won LS Polls

Amritpal Singh, currently lodged in Dibrugarh jail on terror charges, won the Khadoor Sahib seat in Punjab during the Lok Sabha polls.

American-Sikh attorney Jaspreet Singh has approached US Vice President Kamala Harris to seek intervention in the release of jailed Khalistani sympathiser Amritpal Singh. The Waris Punjab De chief, who won the Lok Sabha elections as an Independent candidate from Punjab's Khadoor Sahib is currently lodged in Assam's Dibrugarh jail on terror charges.

Singh said he has thoroughly studied the case and belives that Amritpal's detention is "unjust".

The Khalistani separatist leader was arrested in April 2023 as he surrendered in Punjab's Moga after he was on the run for over a month and was charged with stringent National Security Act.

Singh said he plans to engage with over a hundred American lawmakers to pressure the Indian government to release Amritpal.

"I have met her (Kamala Harris) twice in the last two-three months. I spoke to her about immigration issues. I spoke to her about this (Amritpal Singh's release). She gave me time to come to her office. I will meet her on June 11, Tuesday," Jaspreet said in a video message on YouTube.

Amritpal contested the Lok Sabha polls in absentia from Dibrugarh jail and won by a margin of nearly two lakh votes against Congress's Kulbir Singh.

Reacting to his win, Jaspreet said, "Amritpal Singh's victory was a landslide, and his continued detention raises serious questions about human rights."

He stressed that the case has garnered attention from several American leaders including Kamala Harris, with whom he has been in contact with. In his YouTube video, Singh said he has a long history of advocating for immigration issues and combating hate crimes. He said it is the first time he has been taking up an issue related to India with such fervour.
