Canadian PM Trudeau Announces 25% Reciprocal Tariff On US Products, Calls Trump's Trade War 'Very Dumb'

Canada has imposed 25% tariffs on $30 billion of U.S. imports in retaliation to President Trump's tariffs on Mexican and Canadian goods.

Canada has announced to impose 25 per cent tariff on C$30 billion worth of US imports effective immediately, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau told reporters on Tuesday.

He announced the move just hours after US President Donald Trump slapped 25 per cent tariffs on imports from Mexico and Canada, reported Reuters.

"There is absolutely no justification or need whatsoever for these tariffs today," Trudeau said, warning Canada "will not back down from a fight". “This is a very dumb thing to do,” he said, in remarks he said were directed at Trump. “We two friends fighting is exactly what our opponents around the world want to see.”

He also said that Canada would challenge the US measures at the World Trade Organisation and through the US-Mexico-Canada trade agreement.

“We will also be challenging these illegal actions by filing dispute resolution claims at the World Trade Organization and through the USMCA,” Trudeau noted. “In the meantime, our tariffs will remain in place until the US tariffs are withdrawn and not a moment sooner.”

China's Retaliatory Action

Apart from Mexico and Canada, Trump also doubled the tariff on all Chinese imports from 10 per cent to 20 per cent. The duties were slapped above the existing tariffs on hunders of billions in Chinese goods.

China also immediately came up with retaliotary measures announcing 15 per cent tariffs on chicken, wheat, corn, and cotton imports from the US, reported CNN. Additionally, it also announced a 10 per cent tariff on “sorghum, soybeans, pork, beef, aquatic products, fruits, vegetables, and dairy products,” as per a statement from the  State Council Tariff Commission.

Separately, the Chinese Ministry of Commerce said it added 15 more US companies to its export control list, which included drone maker Skydio. The move could bar Chinese companies from exporting dual-use equipment to these American companies.
