Strong 6.6-magnitude earthquake jolts Indonesia
The country is still reeling from a devastating tsunami which hit it at the end of December and which was triggered by an erupting volcano .
New Delhi: A strong earthquake measuring 6.6 on the Richter scale jolted Indonesia on early Monday with the epicentre recorded at 146 km northwest Halmahera of North Maluku province and the shallow at 10 km under sea bed. A tsunami warning has not been issued by Indonesia’s geophysics agency and no major damage or casualty was reported immediately.
The quake struck at 12.27 a.m. and the intensity of the quake was only felt 3 MMI (Modified Mercalli Intensity) in the province and Bitung of nearby North Sulawesi province, reports said.
Indonesia is prone to quakes as it lies on a vulnerable quake-hit zone called "the Pacific Ring of Fire".
The country faced a devastating tsunami at the end of last year, which was triggered by an erupting volcano in the middle of the Sunda Strait between Java and Sumatra islands that killed more than 400 people.
The tsunami was the third major natural disaster in Indonesia six months, following a series of powerful earthquakes on the islands of Lombok in July and August and a quake-tsunami in September that killed around 2,000 people.
