Many people have been killed and several injured after a shooting in Uppsala in Sweden, multiple reports said.

Swedish police said that several people in the city of Uppsala in eastern Sweden were found with injuries that suggested gunfire after loud bangs were heard in the city, Reuters reported.

The police said in a statement that they had received calls from people who said to have heard noise that sounded like gunfire in the centre of the city.

The shooting occurred on the eve of the Walpurgis spring festival, during which large crowds come onto the streets. Officials have cordoned off the area and an investigation is underway.

The suspect fled on an electric scooter and remains at large even as the police operation is underway to nap the accused. Meanwhile, the trains coming in and out of the city were temporarily stopped between around 5.30 pm and 6 pm local time.
