Indonesia Tsunami Video: Massive wave kills band members during live performance on beach

The lead vocalist of the band is the only known survivor from the band so far whose wife also died in the tragedy.

NEW DELHI: In the tsunami hit the coast on Indonesia's Sunda Strait, where at least 373 people have been killed and over 1400 injured, a rock band Seventeen was playing its second song was hit when a wave burst through the backdrop behind the stage and swept the stage into the audience. It is reported that the band Seventeen was performing at an event near the shore of Tanjung Lesung beach when the massive tidal wave hit their stage. The video of the event went viral on social media sites where one can see the stage lurching forward into the audience along with the band and its equipment. The Jakarta Post reported that in a news release, the band named Seventeen confirmed the deaths of bassist  M. Awal Purbani, also known as Bani, and road manager Oki Wijaya. Seventeen's frontman Riefian Fajarsyah -- whose wife is still missing two days after the disaster -- posted a picture of the band online and suggested that Darmawan had been killed. That would leave Fajarsyah as the only surviving member of the group, which has released a half dozen albums and commands a large fan base in their native country. With no warning, the powerful tsunami swept over popular beaches on southern Sumatra and the western tip of Java and inundated tourist hotels and coastal settlements. The waves followed an eruption and apparent landslide on Anak Krakatau, or "Child of Krakatoa," a volcanic island that formed in the early part of the 20th century near the site of the cataclysmic 1883 eruption of Krakatoa. The eruption of Krakatoa in the 19th century killed more than 30,000 people and hurled so much ash that it turned day to night in the area and reduced global temperatures. Thousands were believed killed by a quake and tsunami that hit Sulawesi island in September, and an earlier quake on the island of Lombok killed 505 people in August.
