Earthquake Of 6.0 Magnitude Jolts Eastern Nepal, No Casualties Reported

The tremors of the earthquake were also felt in Kathmandu valley as well as in other eastern Nepal districts of Morang, Jhapa, Sunsari, Saptari and Taplejung.

New Delhi: An earthquake measuring 6.0 on the Richter scale rocked Khotang district in eastern Nepal on Sunday, news agency PTI reported. However, there were no reports of any damage or casualties, officials said. According to the report, the quake, that had its epicentre in Martinbirta, hit Khotang, 450 km east of Kathmandu, at 8:13am, the National Seismology and Research Centre said.

As per the report, the tremors of the earthquake were also felt in Kathmandu valley as well as in other eastern Nepal districts of Morang, Jhapa, Sunsari, Saptari and Taplejung.

It is to be noted that earlier in April 2015, a devastating earthquake of 7.8 magnitude jolted Nepal, killing around 9,000 people and wounding nearly 22,000 others. The quake also damaged over 800,000 houses and school buildings.

The earthquake, which was known as the Gorkha earthquake also shook several cities across north India and tremors were also felt in Lahore, Pakistan, Lhasa in Tibet, and in Dhaka, Bangladesh, as per reports.

Notably, the quake had also triggered an avalanche on Mount Everest, killing 22 people.

Meanwhile, a major aftershock took place on May 12, 2015, the epicentre of this earthquake was near the Chinese border between Kathmandu and Mount Everest. It was estimated that over 200 people were killed in this earthquake and over 2,500 were injured.

Recent studies have found that the Indian plate is getting subducted under the Eurasian plate at 5cm every year, leading to the formation and increasing height of young fold mountains of the Himalayas, but is also making the region prone to earthquakes.

Disasters such as quakes can wreak havoc if preparedness is not ample, showed the study.
