Former US President Donald Trump has been charged over his alleged efforts to overturn his defeat in the 2020 US election, as reported by BBC. The former US President has been accused of conspiracy to defraud the US, tampering with a witness and conspiracy against the rights of the citizens. The charges against Trump emerged from Special Counsel Jack Smith's investigation into allegations. He had sought to reverse his loss against President Joe Biden.  

Ahead of his indictment, Trump posted on his Truth Social media platform that he had heard to expect an indictment. "I hear that Deranged Jack Smith, in order to interfere with the Presidential Election of 2024, will be putting out yet another Fake Indictment of your favorite President," he wrote, as quoted by news agency Reuters.

Officials have testified that Trump pressured them based on false claims of widespread voting fraud, Reuters reported. Last month, Trump said that he had received a letter from Smith which stated that he was a target of the January 6 grand jury investigation in Washington, the news agency reported.

Smith said that the attack on US Capitol in January 2021 was an unprecedented assault on the seat of American democracy, as reported by BBC. "As described in the indictment, it was fuelled by lies," he said. In his brief statement, Smith pledged to seek “a speedy trial” and emphasised that the Trump “must be assumed innocent until proven guilty,” BBC reported. The former US President is due to appear in court on Thursday in Washington DC.

According to BBC, the indictment contains names of six unnamed co-conspirators: four lawyers, a justice department official and a political consultant. The document has accused Trump of a "conspiracy to impair, obstruct, and defeat the federal government function through dishonesty, fraud and deceit," BBC reported.
