Days After Trip To China, US Climate Envoy John Kerry To Begin 5-Day India Visit From Today

The US President's Special Envoy for Climate John Kerry will travel to India for a five-day trip beginning today, days after concluding his China trip.

US President Joe Biden's Special Envoy for Climate John Kerry will arrive in India for a five-day visit today, an official statement from the US Department of State read. Kerry will be travelling to New Delhi and Chennai during his visit which will end on July 29. The visit comes six days after Kerry concluded his four-day visit to China on July 19 without any new agreements, reported ANI. According to the State Department's statement, the objective of the trip is to advance shared objectives on climate and clean energy, including mutual efforts to build a platform for investments in renewable energy and storage solutions, support the deployment of zero-emission buses, and diversify clean energy supply chains.

The State Department said, "Special Presidential Envoy for Climate John Kerry will travel to New Delhi and Chennai, India, July 25—29...In New Delhi, Secretary Kerry will meet with senior government officials. In Chennai, Secretary Kerry will attend the G20 Environment and Climate Sustainability Ministers Meeting."

During Kerry's visit to China, President Xi Jinping insisted in a speech that Beijing would pursue its goals to phase out carbon dioxide pollution at its own pace and in its own way, stated the ANI report.

Despite the statement, Kerry said that the world’s two biggest polluters had restarted discussions, which were impacted for a year due to a stalemate over Taiwan, trade and other issues.

"We had very frank conversations but we came here to break new ground," Kerry said, adding, "It is clear that we are going to need a little more work," reported ANI citing the Washington Post.

The G-20's environment and climate sustainability ministers' meeting is scheduled to be held on July 28 in Chennai. John Kerry's visit comes at a time when India is focussing more on sustainable energy.
