Cory Booker Breaks Senate Record With Marathon Speech In Defiance Of Trump Administration

Cory Booker delivered a marathon 25-hour speech in the Senate, the longest in history, to protest President Trump's policies. Booker accused Trump of attacking institutions and harming vulnerable communities.

In the longest speech on record, New Jersey Democratic Sen. Cory Booker held the Senate floor with a marathon speech that lasted the entire night and into Tuesday night, setting a historic mark to show the Democrats' residence to the sweeping actions of President Donald Trump. According to AP, Booker took the Senate floor on the Monday evening, saying that he would remain there as long as he was physically able. It set the record for the longest continuous Senate floor speech in the chamber's history. Booker was assisted by fellow Democrats who gave him a break from speaking by asking questions on the Senate floor.

Booker held forth for 25 and 4 minutes, 46 minutes longer than Thurmond’s 1957 speech against the Civil Rights Act.

“What has happened in the last 71 days is a patent demonstration of a time where John Lewis’s call to everyone has, I think, become more urgent and more pressing,” said Booker, as quoted by ALJAZEERA.

“And if I think it is a call for our country, I have to ask myself how I am living these words. So, tonight, I rise with the intention of getting in some ‘good trouble.’ I rise with the intention of disrupting the normal business of the United States Senate for as long as I am physically able. I rise tonight because I believe sincerely that our country is in crisism,” he further added.

Booker, during his speech, accused US President Donald Trump's administration of recklessly attacking institutions and railed against the cost-cutting tsar Elon Musk's cuts to the federal bureaucracy, including the reduction in staffing at the Social Security Administration.

“You don’t insinuate fear among vulnerable communities, you don’t insinuate fear among our elders who deserve our respect and deserve to retire with dignity,” Booker said.

According to ALJAZEERA, a White House spokesperson dismissed the speech of Booker as another attempt to generate an “‘I am Spartacus’ moment”.
