'Very Upsetting': Australian Foreign Minister Condemns Attack On Hindu Temple In Canada

Australian Foreign Minister Penny Wong denounced the attack on a Hindu temple in Canada, emphasising the right of all individuals to safety and respect regardless of their identities.

Australian Foreign Minister Penny Wong condemned the attack on Hindu temple in Canada saying that everyone is entitled to be safe and respected irrespective of their identity and origin.

On Sunday, protestors carrying Khalistani flags stormed inside the premises of the Hindu Sabha temple in Brampton in Canada. The protestors disrupted a consular event co-organised by the temple authorities and the Indian consulate.

"Regardless of their faith, culture, who they are and where they are, all are entitled to be safe and respected...it is very upsetting thing for the Indian community...," Wong said on Tuesday.

"Vandalism should be dealt with appropriate law enforcement authorities...," she added.

Notably, Wong's statement comes during External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar's visit to Australia. He is currently on a two-nation tour which will also take him to Singapore.

The attack on the Hindu temple in Brampton comes amid strained diplomatic ties between India and Canada over Ottawa's alleged support to Khalistani separatists and its accusation of India's involvement in the killing of Hardeep Singh Nijjar.

On Monday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi condemned the attack and said he expected justice from the Canadian government.

"I strongly condemn the deliberate attack on a Hindu temple in Canada. Equally appalling are the cowardly attempts to intimidate our diplomats. Such acts of violence will never weaken India's resolve," Modi said in a post on X.

"We expect the Canadian government to ensure justice and uphold the rule of law," he added.
