Canada PM Justin Trudeau To Resign? Report Says He May Put In Papers Today

In December, Canada's Deputy Prime Minister Chrystia Freeland resigned, saying she was no longer on the same page with Trudeau about the "best path forward for Canada".

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau may announce his resignation as the Liberal Party Leader on Monday, The Globe and Mail reported citing sources. The sources added that Trudeau will announce his plans before a key national caucus meeting on Wednesday.

In December, Canada's Deputy Prime Minister Chrystia Freeland resigned, saying she was no longer on the same page with Trudeau about the "best path forward for Canada". Freeland, who is also the country's Finance Minister, quit just hours before she was due to present a fall economic update to Parliament. She has served as the finance minister since August 2020.

Trudeau took over as Liberal leader in 2013 when the party was in deep trouble and had been reduced to third place in the House of Commons for the first time. Polls show the Liberals will lose to the Conservatives in an election that must be held by late October.

'He Has To Go': NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh Calls For Trudeau To Resign

According to news agency AP, Trudeau, who has led Canada for nearly a decade, has become widely unpopular in recent years over a wide range of issues, including the high cost of living and rising inflation. Last month, the opposition party which has backed Trudeau’s government for years announced that it will vote no confidence in the government after the Parliament resumes on January  27.

The Liberal Party does not hold an outright majority in Parliament. For years, the party has been dependent on NDP's support in order to pass legislation and stay in power. But that support vanished as NDP leader Jagmeet Singh has called on Trudeau to resign.

Opposition Conservative leader Pierre Poilievre earlier said Canada needs an immediate election and requires a prime minister who can face US President-elect Donald Trump from a position of strength.

Trump often refers to Trudeau as the governor of the 51st state and also threatens to impose heavy tariffs if Canada does not stem what he calls a flow of migrants and drugs in the United States
