In the latter half of the video, both Mr Sunak and his wife can be seen performing aarti of the cow, which has been decorated with colours and handprints for the occasion.

New Delhi: British Prime Ministerial candidate Rishi Sunak performed cow worship (gau puja) along with his wife Akshata Murthy in London on Tuesday. A video, showing the 42-year-old leader performing the rituals, who is a finalist in the race to succeed Boris Johnson as the UK Prime Minister, has gone viral on the social media.

In the viral video, Sunak can be seen at a cow enclosure, getting up with a brass vessel in hand, after offering the holy water. The priests around the couple can be heard telling them about the next ritual.

In the latter half of the video, both Mr Sunak and his wife can be seen performing aarti of the cow, which has been decorated with colours and handprints for the occasion.

The video, posted on Twitter, has been tagged along with a caption reading, “Who? Rishi Sunak (PM candidate) Where? London, England What? Performing Cow worship That’s our rich cultural heritage we must be proud about.”

Earlier, ahead of the occasion of Janmashtami, the British Prime Ministerial candidate had visited a temple along with his wife, the video of which went viral.

Taking to his Instagram handle, Rishi Sunak wrote, "Today I visited the Bhaktivedanta Manor temple with my wife Akshata to celebrate Janmashtami, in advance of the popular Hindu festival celebrating Lord Krishna's birthday."

Notably, Rishi Sunak's wife Akshata Murthy is the daughter of Indian Software baron NR Narayana Murthy.

The couple, who met while Sunak was studying for an MBA at Stanford University, tied the knot in a two-day ceremony in Bangalore in the year 2006.

Earlier, Rishi Sunak had said that he is stoic about Liz Truss's runaway lead in the race to Downing Street, and said the plan is to "love bomb" the Tory membership, like he did when he was selected to run for Richmond in North Yorkshire as the Tory member of Parliament in 2015.

It is to be noted that the two candidates will continue on the campaign trail to try and win over undecided voters, and the final results will be declared on September 5.
