As Ukraine Accepts Ceasefire Proposal, Trump Says 'Hopefully, Putin Will Also Agree To It'

Expressing grief over the casualties on both sides in the Russia-Ukraine war, which has been ongoing for more than three years now, the US President stressed that a ceasefire was "very important".

US President Donald Trump on Wednesday welcomed Ukraine's agreement to a ceasefire with Russia following talks with US representatives in Saudi Arabia's Jeddah on Tuesday. Trump expressed hope that Russia will also agree to the ceasefire proposal to "get the war over with".

Expressing grief over the casualties on both sides in the Russia-Ukraine war, which has been ongoing for more than three years now, the US President stressed that a ceasefire was "very important".

"Ukraine ceasefire, just agreed to it a little while ago. Now we have to go to Russia, and hopefully, President (Vladimir) Putin will also agree to it... People are being killed in the cities as things explode throughout the cities. We want to get that war over with," Trump told reporters on Tuesday.

"So, I think it's very big. I think it's a big difference between the last visit you saw at the Oval Office and so that's a total ceasefire, Ukraine has agreed to it, and hopefully Russia will agree to it. We're going to meet with him later on today and tomorrow and hopefully we'll be able to wipe out a deal...The ceasefire is very important. If we can get Russia to do it, that'll be great," he added.

US To Now Present Ceasefire Proposal To Russia

Trump's remarks came after Ukraine accepted a US proposal for a 30-day ceasefire and also agreed to immediate negotiations with Russia. The development marked a sharp shift since the Oval Office spat between Trump and Zelenskyy, which led to the suspension of US assistance.

Following Ukraine's positive response, the US decided to resume intelligence sharing and security assistance with Kyiv.

Secretary of State Marco Rubio, who led the US delegation in Jeddah talks, said Washington would present the ceasefire proposal to Kremlin to end the ongoing conflict.

“We’re going to tell them this is what’s on the table. Ukraine is ready to stop shooting and start talking. And now it’ll be up to them to say yes or no,” Rubio told reporters after the talks, Associated Press reported. “If they say no, then we’ll unfortunately know what the impediment is to peace here.”

National Security Advisor Mike Waltz said: "The president has made it clear... that ALL fighting needs to stop — and the Ukrainians have agreed to that proposal, they're ready for peace. And now, we'll take that to the Russians".
