All 67 People Feared Dead In US Plane-Helicopter Crash Near Washington

US officials said that they were still searching for other casualties but did not believe there were any other survivors, making it the deadliest air crash in the US in around 24 years.

All 64 people onboard the American Airlines plane that collided with an Army helicopter on Wednesday night while landing at Ronald Reagan National Airport near Washington are feared dead, Emergency services chief John Donnelly said.

While 64 people were on the American Airlines plane, three others were onborad the military helicopter when the aircraft collided over Washington DC's Potomac River.

The rescue workers have so far recovered the bodies of 27 passengers from the American Airlines jet. The body of the plane was found upside down in three sections in waist-deep water.

US officials said that they were still searching for other casualties but did not believe there were any other survivors, making it the deadliest air crash in the US in around 24 years, according to the Associated Press.

Washington DC Fire and EMS Chief John Donnelly said that there are no probable survivors in the plane crash. "We don't believe there are any survivors from this accident," Donnelly said, adding that the rescue teams have recovered 27 bodies from the plane and one from the helicopter.

US' Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) said that the crash occurred when a regional jet that had departed from Wichita, Kansas, collided with a military helicopter on a training flight during its approach to an airport runway.

Meanwhile, US Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy said that the US has the safest airports in the world. “We have early indicators of what happened here and I will tell you with complete confidence we have the safest airspace in the world,” Duffy said.
