The Consulate General of India in Toronto said that it was in close contact with the 21-year-old victim's family and that the homicide investigation was underway.

A 21-year old Indian student, Harsimrat Randhawa, was killed in Canada's Ontario after she was struck by a stray bullet. The victim, a student at Mohawk College in Hamilton, was waiting at a bus stop on her way to work when she was hit by a bullet during a shooting incident involving two vehicles.

Hamilton Police is currently investigating the case that happened Wednesday evening, saying Randhawa was not involved in the shooting and was merely an innocent bystander.

The Consulate General of India in Toronto said that it was in close contact with the innocent woman's family and that the homicide investigation was underway. In a post on X on Friday, the Consulate General of India, Toronto said: "We are deeply saddened by the tragic death of Indian student Harsimrat Randhawa in Hamilton, Ontario."

"As per local police, she was an innocent victim, fatally struck by a stray bullet during a shooting incident involving two vehicles. A homicide investigation is currently underway. We are in close contact with her family and are extending all necessary assistance. Our thoughts and prayers are with the bereaved family during this difficult time," it added.

Hamilton Police said the incident took place at around 7:30 PM (local time) on Wednesday, April 16. According to the police's statement, it received reports of a shooting near Upper James and South Bend Road streets in Hamilton. Upon arriving at the spot, they found Randhawa with a gunshot wound to the chest, following which she was rushed to a hospital. She succumbed to the buller injury during treatment, news agency PTI reported.

The report said that investigators have found out that a passenger of a black car fired at the occupants of a white sedan, as visible in a video from the spot. Shortly after the shooting, both the vehicles left the scene.

Hamilton Police said that the shots from the shooting incident also entered a residence through its rear window. The occupants of the house were watching television a few feet away, and thus got saved. No one was injured in the home, police said.
