Volvo Introduces Red Key; Limits Speed Of Your Car

Known for being the first manufacturer to introduce new safety features such as pedestrian detection and cyclist detection in cars, Volvo has had safety as its top priority. In keeping with the tradition, the company has now introduced another feature – a special key, the 'Red Key'. Special keys are generally offered with sports cars to unleash additional power. However, the one offered with Volvo does just the opposite.

The Red Key is meant for someone whose handling of your car you are not fully confident of, like younger drivers and valet parking and repair workshop staff. When the car is driven with the Red Key, the top speed is reduced to 75mph (120kmph) and the Adaptive Cruise Control maintains maximum distance from the car in front. The top volume of the audio system is reduced as well. Other safety features like BLIS (Blind Spot Information System), Lane Keeping Aid, Forward Collision Warning, Driver Alert Control, Distance Alert and Traffic Sign Recognition are permanently activated when the car is driven with the Red Key.

David Baddeley, operations director, Volvo Car UK, said, “Handing over your car to a third party often comes with a feeling of trepidation. For those who regularly entrust their car to others, Volvo’s Red Key gives owners the confidence that their vehicle is being driven responsibly, no matter whose hands it’s in.” The Red Key is available for Volvo’s 90 series cars, such as the S90, V90 and XC90. However, it is only being offered by Volvo dealers in the UK, for a sum of £110 (Rs 9228).

Volvo is currently working on a new compact SUV, the XC40, and has been releasing minute details about it. Like all Volvo cars, the new SUV will also have passenger safety at the heart of its design. The Swedish carmaker is expected to launch it in India sometime next year.
