Background

Tamil Nadu + Puducherry Election Results 2021: The 243 Assembly seats in Tamil Nadu and 30 in the Union Territory of Puducherry went on polls in a single phase on April 6th, the results of which are set to be declared today, Sunday May 2nd. The magic figure in Tamil Nadu is 118, the minimum seats required for a party or a coalition to stake claim for the government formation. The DMK and its allies, including the Congress, are ahead in at least 146 seats.

The massive tussle is mainly between the ruling AIADMK and MK Stalin-led DMK. The AIADMK is contesting this election in alliance with the BJP while the DMK has partnered with Congress. This is the first assembly poll in the state without two of Tamil Nadu’s towering political figures, M Karunanidhi and J Jayalalithaa. It is yet to be seen if ruling AIADMK, allied with BJP, will manage to secure a third term in Tamil Nadu assembly or Karunanidhi’s son Stalin will inherit the wide following his father. The newly formed Makkal Needhi Maiam of Kamal Haasan, which contested the polls in alliance with some regional parties, has also emerged as a challenger.

In Puducherry, the BJP has contested the polls in alliance with the AIADMK and AINRC while the Congress has allied with the DMK. AINRC chief N Rangaswamy has announced as the NDA’s chief ministerial candidate while UPA has not made its CM candidate’s name public.

Given the rise in Covid-19 cases, Chief Election Commissioner Sushil Chandra on Saturday reviewed the counting arrangements with senior officers of the Commission and the Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) the Union Territory of Puducherry in a virtual meeting. He directed that all laid down instructions of the Commission must be adhered to besides directing that all counting halls must be fully Covid guidelines compliant. No candidates/agents will be allowed inside the counting hall without undergoing RT-PCR/RAT test or without having two doses of vaccination against Covid-19. The Election Commission has already banned any victory procession.
