Spied: Tata H5X On Light Camo, Reveals Rear Profile
Tata will launch the H5X in the first quarter of 2019
Test mules of Tata Motors’ upcoming H5X-based compact SUV were spotted near Pune yet again. The two test mules seen in these pictures look production-ready and we’re glad to see that Tata has retained the striking-looking headlamps and taillights from the concept showcased at the Auto Expo 2018. Since the SUV is expected to be launched by April 2019, we expect the homegrown carmaker to unveil its production-spec version by the end of this year.
The H5X concept gave us a fair idea of what to expect from the production model. At the expo, Tata Motors said that the production version will retain 80 per cent of the flashy H5X concept’s design, just like it did with the Nexon. Apart from the H5X’s sloping roofline, the two versions of the SUV that were spotted testing are pretty much identical to the show car. The H5X’s sloping roofline and tiny glass section at the rear are likely to make way for a relatively straighter silhouette with a much larger rear windshield so as not to hamper visibility out the back. Tata has, however, retained the deep cut under the slim taillights and the protruding metalwork just underneath it that made the concept look really wide.
From the spy images, it looks like the production-spec SUV will have sleek wraparound headlamps and taillights as well as simple yet classy-looking five-spoke alloy wheels (probably 18-inch units). The H5X concept was shod with gigantic 22-inch wheels, but the wheels on the test mule are much smaller and feature a similar five-spoke pattern. Aside from the red paint seen on the test mules, expect the production-spec SUV to be offered with flashy exterior colours like the show car’s orange hue.
The compact SUV is based on Tata’s new OMEGA (Optimal Modular Efficient Global Advanced) architecture, which is a derivative of Land Rover’s D8 architecture that underpins the Discovery Sport. All future Tata cars that measure over 4.5m in length will be based on this modular platform.
The upcoming H5X-based SUV is likely to be bigger than its rivals such as the Hyundai Creta and Jeep Compass. In fact, the H5X concept has an overall of length of 4575mm, which makes it noticeably longer than the Hyundai (4270mm) and the Jeep (4395mm). Even the test mules look bigger than the competition. Tata is expected to price it between Rs 12 lakh and Rs 18 lakh, thus covering the space between compact and midsize SUV segments.
Speaking of engine options, we expect Tata to offer a petrol motor as well as a diesel engine with the SUV. Although not confirmed, it is expected to be powered by Fiat’s 2.0-litre MultiJet diesel that does duty on the Jeep Compass. Later, it could also borrow the Compass’ 1.4-litre turbocharged MultiAir II petrol motor as well. Transmission options are yet to be finalised. However, it is likely to be offered with an automatic gearbox apart from a standard 6-speed manual.
